How the Kid's Classes Came To Be

by Sensei Miranda Molnar

On our way home from a seminar in Edmonton, Don Ragush Sensei, Yancy Orchard and I stopped in Lloydminster to visit Sensei’s daughter, who was teaching a basketball class to children when we arrived. We took seats in the bleachers and waited for her class to finish. As I watched the children learn to dribble, pass, and shoot, I remembered that some Aikido dojos offered a children’s component, and wondered about the history of a children’s class at the Saskatoon dojo. While there had been a children’s class at one point, right now, I was told, there was no one to teach it. I don’t remember who it was, but someone jokingly asked if I wanted to teach it, and I, not jokingly, said “yes”. I confessed that the thought of teaching a children’s class at our dojo was actually more than attractive. Later I was given permission to take the steps to work toward offering a class in the fall. With much help not only from the Saskatoon dojo, but also from the Regina and Calgary dojos, the class was ready for September, 2005. On the first class on September 16th there were 16 little but energetic Aikidoists ready to enter into the simple, profound, marital, gentle art of Aikido.
