Basic Aikido Teminology

Counting:

ichi - one
ni - two
san - three
shi - four
go - five
roku - six
shichi - seven
hachi - eight
kyu - nine
ju - ten

Roles:

uki - the one who receives the technique; the attacker
nagi- the one who performs the technique

Stance and Movement:

hanmi - stance in ready position
ai-hanmi - assymetric stance, uke and nage have same feet forward (both left or both right)
gyaku-hanmi - symmetrical stance (mirror immage), uke and nage have opposite feet forward
maai - distance between uke and nage
irimi - entering
tenkan - turning
omote - entering in front of uke
ura - entering behind uke
seiza - kneeling
tachi waza - standing techniques
suwari waza - kneeling techniques
hamni handachi - nage kneeling, uki standing
ukemi - roll, breakfall
mae-ukemi - forward roll
ushiro-ukemi - back roll
shikko - knee walking
hara - centre
kokyu - breath

Attacks:

shomen-uchi - vertical blow to the head
yokomen-uchi - horizontal blow to the head
tsuki - straight punch
katate tori - one hand wrist grasp
wrist ryote tori - two hands grasping two wrists
ushiro-ryotekubi tori - two hands grasp two wrists from behind
ryote-katate tori or morote tori - two hands grasp one wrist
kata tori - shoulder grasp
ushiro-ryo-kata tori - both shoulders grasped from behind
mune tori - lapel grasp

Techniques:

ikkyo - first pinning technique; arm pin
nikyo - second technique; inward hand press or turning
sankyo - third technique; outward hand twist
yonkyo - fourth technique; wrist pressure point
gokyo - fifth technique; wrist press immobilization
kotegaeshi - wrist turn out
irmi nage - entering throw
kaiten nage - rotation throw
kokyu nage - breath throw
koshi nage - hip throw
juji garami - cross arm lock throw
shiho nage - four direction throw
tenchi nage - heaven and earth throw
atemi - defensive strike
tai no tenkan - turning exercise, usually with a partner
kokyu ho - breath power exercise, usually with a partner
kokyu doza - breath extension exercise
